Sex Therapy

Sex can be a scary and complicated subject for many of us, but it doesn’t have to be.

Sex Therapy can

increase sexual intimacy and connection.

heal sexual abuse.

heal porn/sex addiction or fetishes.

resolve sexual performance anxiety.

heal infidelity and trust issues.

help hetero/LGBT/poly/mono.

improve communication and sexual comfort.

resolve cultural/social barriers.

Sex therapy often gets misunderstood. Quite often we carry a compartmentalized view of sex and think of it as a purely physical drive. However, from a holistic perspective, sex connects to our cognitive, emotional, and spiritual body as well. For that reason, approaches to sex therapy need to be holistic where the multi-layers of the onion get peeled in order to understand what might be going on at the physical level.

We all yearn for connection.  We long to bond with others on an emotional and sometimes a physical level.  While sex is not the only form of intimacy, it can be a body-mind-spirit avenue to get closer to ourselves and others.

Sometimes our unique stories and the systems built around us make it challenging for us to carry our sexuality in a healthy, loving, and enjoyable way.  We may hide shame about our sexual orientation, struggle to communicate our desires, or feel uncomfortable in our own skin.  We may not even want to talk about sex, always setting the topic aside or avoiding it at all costs.

Whether you want to address specific sexual challenges, become more intimate with your partner, or learn how to love your sexual self, we can help.

What exactly is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy is a form of psychotherapy focused on addressing concerns related to sexual identity, orientation, function, intimacy problems, and sexual trauma.

Your sex therapist has specialized training to help you with a wide range of issues, from sexual wellness, addictions, or dysfunctions to performance anxiety, body image, and alternative lifestyles.

Sex therapy is an effective form of treatment for individuals of any age.  The goal is to support you to:

  • Address shame, fear, or stigmas around sex

  • Explore your sexual identity and orientation

  • Uncover issues behind sexual concerns

  • Heal from sexual trauma

  • Love yourself and your body

  • Learn new ways to boost intimacy

  • Improve sexual performance

  • Embrace your sexuality with confidence, curiosity, and joy

Also, sex therapy does not involve any form of sexual activity or intimacy with the therapist.  Sex therapy works the same as traditional talk therapy, just with a different focus.

Do I Need Sex Therapy?

We understand that discussing sex with others, particularly with someone you don’t know, can be terrifying.  Yet sex therapists are mental health professionals with the knowledge and tools to help you—all within a confidential and judgment-free environment.

Now, you don’t need to experience sexual difficulties to come to sex therapy.  If you are simply curious or looking to explore the intricacies of your sexuality, our door is wide open.

Still, sex therapy is particularly beneficial for the following issues:

  • Stress, anxiety, or dissatisfaction with sex

  • Difficulty with sexual performance, arousal, or orgasms

  • Lack of sexual desire or alignment problems (e.g., not having the same “fire” or timing as your partner)

  • Changes to sex life due to a significant life event (e.g., newborn, health condition)

  • Challenges related to gender identity or sexual orientation

  • Self-esteem and body image issues

  • Painful intercourse

  • Addiction to sex or porn

  • Sexual trauma or abuse*

*Your safety is our priority. If you experience sexual abuse, contact the domestic violence hotline (1.800.799.7233) or visit its website for more resources.

How Can Sex Therapy Help Me?

Sex therapy can help you navigate a broad spectrum of sexual challenges, including:

Women’s Sexual Wellness: Sex therapy can help women overcome conditions like female orgasmic disorder, sexual interest/arousal disorder, pelvic pain/penetration disorder, post-partum depression, and infertility to achieve sexual wellness.

Sexual Dysfunction: Sexual dysfunctions, affecting sexual functioning and desire, include women's conditions like female orgasmic disorder and men's issues such as erectile disorder; sex therapy helps explore beliefs and emotions connected to these ailments.

Sex and Porn Addiction: Compulsive behaviors such as sex or pornographic addiction can harm relationships, daily activities, and well-being, with the potential to worsen over time; sex therapy assists in identifying patterns, uncovering underlying factors, and determining a healing course of action.

Other Ways It Can Help Include:

Sexual Performance Anxiety: Sex therapy offers a safe space to address sexual performance anxiety, arising from factors like lack of confidence, inexperience, or body shame, providing strategies for a more fulfilling sex life.

Self-Esteem and Body Image Issues: Self-perception, peer judgment, shame, and comparisons can impact our sexual connection; sex therapy helps you reconnect with yourself and your body for better alignment with your partner.

Alternative Lifestyles: Considering alternative lifestyles like polyamory, swinging, or BDSM may require support; sex therapy helps you understand these options, discuss goals and expectations with your partner, and establish safe dynamics.
